Longlisted for a Business in the Community Responsible Business Award

Action and Impact
It was seven years ago that Landsec – the UK’s biggest real estate investment trust with a commercial property portfolio worth £14.5 billion – established its Community Employment Programme (CEP). The programme has so far changed the lives of more than 1,000 people, people who might not otherwise have had a change to access meaningful employment or training.

The programme offers pre-employment work experience opportunities in construction and customer service with successful candidates moving into employment in construction, hospitality, security and facilities management. It’s an initiative that is getting to the heart of addressing the social challenge of unemployment in the UK by supporting those furthest from the jobs market. Six out of 10 employers automatically exclude those with a criminal record and, with little prospects, almost 60% will reoffend in the first year.
For the business, the CEP is helping to address the skills gaps and skills shortages in the construction industry and, in the process, is fostering staff engagement and partnership working, with volunteer and pro-bono work boosting professional skills across the business.
“Last year, we took our pioneering CEP nationwide, helping even more disadvantaged people gain access to the world of work. I’ve seen for myself the powerful effect this can have on individuals and the local community,” says Chief Executive, Robert Noel.
